I have a rendezvous with Death

At some disputed barricade,

When spring comes back with rustling shade

And apple-blossoms fill the air-

I have a rendezvous with Death

When Spring brings back blue days and fair

It may be he shall take my hand

and lead me into his dark land

and close my eyes and quench my breath-

It may be I shall pass him still,

I have a rendezvous with Death

On some scarred slope of battered hill,

When Spring comes round again this year

And the first meadow-flowers appear.

God knows 'twere better to be deep

Pillowed in silk and scented down,

Where Love throbs out in blissful sleep,

Pulse nigh to pulse, and breath to breath,

Where hushed awakenings are dear.....

But I've a rendezvous with Death

At midnight in some flaming town,

When Spring trips north again this year,

And I to my pledged word am true,

I shall not fail that rendezvous.

나는 죽음과 만나기로 했다

처열한 바리케이드 공판장 속에서

살랑거리는 나뭇잎 그림자를 안고

봄이 찾아와 사과 꽃이 만발할 때

나는 죽음과 만날 것이다

봄이 다시 푸른 하늘을 데리고 돌아 올 때

죽음은 나의 손을 이끌어 어두운 나라로 인도하고

나의 눈꺼풀을 내려 가만히 숨을 걷어 가겠지

나는 그런 죽음과 만나기로 했다

총알을 맞아 움푹 움푹 무너진

상처 투성이 언덕 비탈에서

올해도 다시 봄이 찾아오고

들꽃이 피어나기 시작할 때

차라리 향기로운 비단 베게의 반쪽 잠 드는게 좋을까

사랑에 가슴 설레며 더 없이 행복한 마음 속으로

빠져드는 것이 좋을까

하지만 역시 나는 죽음과 만날 것이다

총알을 뒤집어 쓰고 눈부신 불길이 타오르는 심야의 마을에서

봄이 이 북녁 땅을 다시 찾을 때

꼭 만나기로 죽음과 굳게 약속했으니까

백 년이 지난 오늘 날

왜 또 이렇게 젊은이를 데려 가야 하는가

수많은 어머니들의 가슴을 찢어 놓아야 하는가

고통과 고통속의 전쟁터

그는 자연의 심판을 받으리라
